Counterfeit Alcohol Syndicate busted in Meru as Officers Seize Alcohol Worth Ksh. 1.5M

Meru County, Kenya - The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has confiscated counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at approximately Ksh. 1.5 million during an enforcement operation in Githongo town, Meru County. The joint operation, conducted with the Kenya Police Service and other government agencies, followed leads from members of the public.

A total of 91 cartons containing counterfeit alcohol mimicking locally registered trademarks were recovered. The products are suspected to have been manufactured in unregulated and unhygienic environments, raising serious concerns about public health and safety.

The operation led by the Mt. Kenya Regional Inspector Mr. Robert Chichir arrested one suspect at the scene, while the ring leader is still being sought by authorities.

Speaking about the operation, the ACA Executive Director Dr. Robi Mbugua Njoroge noted the increased circulation of counterfeit alcohol that was a growing threat to public health saying, “These products are not only illegal but also dangerous, as they are made in environments that lack basic health and safety standards. This seizure is part of wider government efforts to fight counterfeit trade and curb the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse.”

The crackdown aligns with ongoing multi-agency efforts to disrupt illegal supply chains and protect consumers. The government has intensified such operations nationwide, targeting networks involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit and substandard goods.

“The impact of counterfeit alcohol goes beyond health risks - it damages legitimate businesses, denies government revenue, and fuels illegal trade,” the ACA Director added. “We remain focused on removing these products from circulation.”

The seized goods have been transported to the ACA depot in Nyeri for further investigation. Samples will be submitted to accredited laboratories, including the Government Chemist, for analysis and confirmation of authenticity.

The Authority is urging the public to report any suspicious goods or activities through its official hotlines or regional offices.

ACA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding consumers, supporting legal trade, and strengthening national efforts against counterfeiting and illicit goods.
