UK and Kenya in Anti-Counterfeiting and Intellectual Property Protection Dialogue

Trade relations between Kenya and United Kingdom are set to benefit as talks on joint efforts against counterfeit trade were discussed at a meeting between the Anti-Counterfeit Authority Kenya and UK representatives.

The meeting held in Nairobi was organized under the banner “UK-Kenya anti-counterfeit & IP protection dialogue” sought to strengthen strategic collaboration on IP issues between the two nations.

The ACA Kenya Executive Director Dr. Robi Njoroge Mbugua said joint talks on protection of Intellectual Property matters are important to both countries toward promoting fair trade saying “considering that counterfeit trade is transnational in nature, it is important for nations to navigate joint efforts areas since no country or government agency or organization acting alone can win the war because of the interconnected nature of the problem.”

Calling for an international response to the problem, the Chief Executive Officer of British Chamber of Commerce in Kenya Ms. Farida Abbas said “working together towards bettering IP rights can only benefit Kenya with a better a business environment & further investment into the country'.

Meeting was also graced Director General of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group (ACG) Mr. Phil Lewis. who called for strengthened partnership between the Government and Business communities. He called it the “golden thread to winning the war against counterfeits".

The ACG is a UK based international group whose members are drawn from business communities globally and works with governments and law enforcement agencies across the world to fight counterfeiting and to “protect business and consumers from the increasing dangers counterfeit trade”.

The United Kingdom’s (UK) delegates were drawn from Department for International Trade (DIT), Department for Business & Trade (DBT), UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), British Chamber of Commerce Kenya (BCCK), K’s Bilateral Trade Relations (BTR)
